Let’s talk about Detroit Red Wings “German Machine” Moritz Seider
From being a surprise sixth overall pick, to winning the Calder Trophy, Moritz Seider cemented himself as the number one defenseman for the Detroit Red Wings. Here are a few reminders of what he’s done so far and where he’s heading.
After being drafted sixth overall, about 15-20 spots higher than he was projected to go, Moritz Seider became the shock pick of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. Since then, he has proven to be far more than anybody expected by becoming the Red Wings bonified number one defenseman.
The 23-year-old German had to become the Red Wings number-one defenseman in an incredibly short time, and he’s continuing to prove that fact every year. While his production may have dropped from his Calder-winning rookie season it’s not by an incredible amount it’s been at most, eight points less than his 50-point rookie season.
Seider has been given the most difficult task of being the first person the coaching staff turns to for penalty kills and taking on other teams’ top lines. No other Detroit Red Wings defender has come anywhere close to what he was put through last season.
