With a 56-9 victory on Saturday at Hard Rock Stadium, the No. 12 Miami Hurricanes easily defeated the Florida A&M Rattlers to move to 2-0 on the season. These are five significant winning statistics.
▪ More than 300 yards and three touchdowns: Hurricanes quarterback Cam Ward passed for more over 300 yards this week, specifically 304 yards, for the second straight week. In his first two appearances as a starter, he became the first quarterback in Hurricanes history to finish with at least 300 passing yards and three passing touchdowns. ▪ 3: Tyler Baron, a defensive lineman, recorded three sacks during the Hurricanes’ Saturday victory over Florida A&M. He is the first player from Miami to record three sacks since October 15, 2022, when Akheem Mesidor recorded three and a half sacks against Virginia Tech. Baron is only the eighth Hurricanes player in the last 20 years to have a three-sack game, according to the Associated Press. By means of two matchups with Miami Baron has already tallied four sacks and five-and-a-half tackles for loss since moving from Tennessee.
10th place: Senior wide receiver Xavier Restrepo has now amassed 1,933 receiving yards in his Miami career with four catches for 104 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown. In school history, that ranks as the tenth-highest. On that list on Saturday, he overtook Allen Hurns and Andre Johnson. At this point in his college career, he is 67 yards short of 2,000 yards, 200 yards from breaking Santana Moss’ school record of 2,547 career receiving yards, and 615 yards from rising to ninth place in Miami history (Phillip Dorsett now holds that position with 2,132 yards).
Furthermore, with 142 receptions overall, Restrepo is just 41 receptions short of Mike Harley’s school record of 182 career catches and one reception short of tying Moss and Michael Irvin for fifth place in Hurricanes history. Restrepo played in his eighth career 100-yard game on Saturday. ▪ 22: Of the 26 scholarships awarded to Hurricanes A true freshman was on the field during Saturday’s victory over FAMU, based on the box score’s participation log after the game.
Judd Anderson, the quarterback; Jordan Lyle and Chris Wheatley-Humphrey, the running backs; Joshisa “JoJo” Trader, Ny Carr, and Chance Robinson, the wide receivers; Elija Lofton, the tight end; Deryc Plazz and Nino Francavilla, the offensive linemen; Justin Scott, Marquise Lightfoot, Armondo Blount, Cole McConathy II, Artavius Jones, and Booker Pickett, the defensive linemen; linebackers Adarius Hayes and Cam Pruitt; defensive backs Zaquan Patterson, OJ Frederique, Dylan Day, and Ryan Mack; and the kicker Abram Murray round out the group.
The group’s offensive totals included four receptions for 15 yards and seven carries for 47 yards and a touchdown. 10 tackles, 1 sack (by Scott), 2 interceptions (by Pruitt and Hayes), 4 pass breakups (by Patterson, Hayes, Pruitt, and Frederique), and 1 quarterback hurry (by Lightfoot) were totalled by the defensive players. In the fourth quarter, Murray also attempted an extra point and made a 38-yard field goal.
1,044: Elijah Arroyo, a tight end, scored his first touchdown of the game on Saturday, a 17-yard reception from Ward. It was only his second touchdown of the career and his first since he scored against Pittsburgh on October 30, 2021, while still a true freshman. That is 1,044 days between his two touchdown receptions while playing for Miami.
Additionally, Arroyo, Lofton, and sophomore Riley Williams combined for four catches and 47 yards on Saturday at the tight end position. Hurricanes tight ends have caught 11 receptions for 183 yards and two touchdowns through two games this season. In addition to surpassing the total yards (154) and touchdowns (one) they had during the entire 2023 season, the group is only seven receptions away from matching that number.
