The star of Good Morning Britain, Kate Garraway, talked candidly about her experience winning the National Television Award and why she would have been “floored” by her son Billy’s planned speech.
The star won the award for best authored documentary for her special Kate Garraway: Derek’s Story. Kate who was joined by her two children Darcey, 17, and Billy, 11, at the prestigious event, revealed that Billy wanted to say a few words while collecting the gong onstage.
A documentary about her late husband Derek Draper has Kate Garraway crying with emotion. She said, “It was very emotional for us,” while speaking with Ed Balls and Susanna Reid. When someone says “congratulations,” it seems strange. Backstage, the children started crying, and Billy stated, “I did want to speak,” even if at the moment neither of them wanted to talk.
She went on: “[Billy] wanted to say, ‘Dad lives on in our hearts,’ and I said, ‘I’m so glad you didn’t, because that would have left me speechless and stunned.'”
It’s difficult for us to accept the congrats, but I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who voted—not for me, but for the caregivers—after receiving so many messages this morning. “It concerns caregivers and Derek’s message regarding weaker individuals and not seeing care to be a luxury. He says, “I feel like a failure, I’m letting people down,” a lot in the documentary, but his incredible carers never let him feel that way. I know I talk about it a lot, but since everyone has lost someone, I feel like I’m being a little indulgent, even if it’s fantastic for them.”
