ALLEN PARK — Allen Robinson was drafted by the Detroit Lions on Thursday afternoon off of the practice squad, making him the team’s second large-bodied wideout of the week. Earlier in the week, Tim Patrick was also removed from the P-squad. Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator, stated that he had hoped for more size around the perimeter during training camp, but all of the large players ended up failing. The Lions then looked to their professional scouting division, which saw Robinson (6-2) and Patrick (6-foot-4) as possible fits. Prior to Week 1, both players signed with the practice squad. In Week 2, Patrick made his Lions debut, and in Week 3, Robinson did the same.
This season, Patrick is the only Lions receiver who has not been called Amon-Ra St. Brown or Jameson Williams. He has three catches for 20 yards. Last week in Arizona, Robinson made his Lions debut, playing one snap. Robinson attended Orchard Lake St. Mary’s for his high school basketball career. He was born in Detroit. In 2014, the Jacksonville Jaguars selected him in the second round after he earned an All-American at Penn State. Last season, he caught 34 passes for 280 yards in Pittsburgh.
