Days After Patrick Mahomes’ Massive Personal Loss, Favorite Teammate Travis Kelce Finds a Way to Cheer Up QB Friend
Despite having a spectacular end to the Super Bowl 2023 campaign, Patrick Mahomes and his family find themselves with heavy hearts. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback led them to their second Super Bowl ring in the last four years, and while the offseason was meant to be all fun and games, the family is going through a shocking loss. Earlier Mahomes’ mother, Randi Mahomes shared saddening news of one of their key family members being hospitalized.
Patrick Mahomes had to bid farewell to his grandmother, Debbie Bates after she continually struggled with health issues. The news of her death was broken by a close friend of the family, as the Mahomes household appears shaken. However, being a professional athlete, Mahomes is all too familiar with the next-play mindset and is trying hard to look ahead to the future. Fortunately for Mahomes, his teammate, Travis Kelce, found a way to make the Super Bowl MVP smile in these tough times.
Travis Kelce can be occasionally seen spiking the football at the end of a touchdown. Maybe the Pro Bowler carried the same attitude during his ceremonial first pitch of the Cleveland Guardians home opener on Friday. Kelce went on to throw one of the most questionable first pitches ever, replicating Carly Rae Jepsen’s first pitch to some degree. Repping his ‘I’m From Cleveland’ t-shirt, Kelce hurled the ball at Guardians pitcher Shane Bieber, who barely jumped in time to avoid injury.
Kelce and Mahomes share a special bond, as their ‘bromance’ has been well documented over the years. Maybe their off-field chemistry has fueled up the process of their emerging as the best QB-TE tandems in the entire league. Recounting the early days of friendship, Mahomes earlier said on the Today Show, “The friendship started just because we’re very similar where we want to win. But we like to enjoy life, too, We’ve kind of built this friendship of we’re gonna go out there and compete and we’re gonna enjoy it while we do.”
Travis Kelce agrees with Mahomes and added, “You could tell the first day that Pat came into the building it was gonna be fun playing with him.” The two have chronicled their beautiful friendship away from the game while creating history together on the field. Both Mahomes and Kelce have always pulled through for each other, and with Mahomes losing his grandmother, he definitely needs the people around him to be there.
Patrick Mahomes’ grandmother, Debbie Martin, was a crucial part of him being the man he is today. While the signal-caller started throwing passes at Whitehouse High School, it was Debbie, who kept her faith and encouraged Mahomes to pursue the game seriously. Debbie had been around watching Mahomes make a mark on the NFL world and once stated her pride during an interview with NBC back in 2019,
“I can’t believe it’s all happening. He’s only 23 years old. And Kansas City’s had him a year. I just wish to have more billboards as they have in Kansas City here in Tyler. Because Patrick is a bought-house kid. He hadn’t changed and will always be Patrick.” said his doting grandmother. With Debbie Martin passing on to the afterlife, Patrick Mahomes and his family are left dealing with a void that only time can heal. It is safe to assume that just like all these years, Debbie will continue watching over Mahomes and still enjoying the pride she once felt.
