Starting this weekend, the Glamour Boys will have the chance to compete in another local cup tournament after missing out on the MTN8.
WHAT OCCURRED? A number of players, including Edmislon Dove, Brandon Petersen, Bongani Sam, George Matlou, and most recently, Gaston Sirino, have been absent for the Kaizer Chiefs. The club has started the season quite well despite the absences, collecting six points out of a possible nine in their three Premier Soccer League games, although losing to Sundowns in a contentious encounter.
THE LARGER IMAGE Sirino, a free agent who joined the Glamour Boys during the most recent transfer window, is one player who has had a significant impact. After contributing two assists and a goal in his first two league games, the 33-year-old was substituted off against his old team, Mamelodi Sundowns, because of an injury. Coach Nasreddine Nabi has some good news for the Amakhosi supporters, despite the uncertainty surrounding the creative midfielder’s ability to recuperate in time to play SuperSport United in the Carling Knockout.
WHAT NABI SAID
“You will notice that we felt the absence of Sirino in our last game against Marumo Gallants [in the friendly CUFA Cup],” the Tunisian said ahead of the game.
“It shows the importance of that player inside the team. Maybe he is not fully recovered but we will try and count on him in the next game, maybe not the 90 minutes, but we will try and recover him for the game,” Nabi concluded.
UP NEXT? Gavin Hunt, the coach of SuperSport United, is anxious for a victory after his team was eliminated early from MTN8 in the first hurdle and had a lackluster start in the PSL. They won’t have an easy time against Amakhosi, though, who are eager to recover from the contentious defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns and are anxious to give their 80-year-old chairman Kaizer Motaung a trophy “gift” for his recent birthday.
