Bjorn Borg made a touching gesture to the son of 11-time Grand Slam winner Bjorn Borg when the pair played at the Nordea Open earlier this year.
Leo Borg recently went on record to say Nadal was the reason he first picked up a tennis racket, even though his dad is recognised as one of the sport’s greatest-ever players.
When the two met in Sweden in the summer, Borg was so enamored of the Spanish player that he called it a dream come true to face Nadal in a competitive match. When Nadal was matched against the 21-year-old in Sweden, he was just getting back into shape for the Olympics in Paris.
Although Nadal easily defeated Borg Jr. in straight sets, it was actually a bit of a non-event, but that didn’t stop any polite conversation from happening after the play.
When Bjorn Borg accepted Borg’s acknowledgement, he replied, “Very nice feelings.” Playing against the son of one of the greatest legends in our sport’s history has been an enormous honor for me. I think he performed really well, and I wish him the best since he has a bright career ahead of him.
Borg would have been ecstatic to hear it, considering how much he admired the Majorca-born star.
