Former Kennesaw State football coach Brian Bohannon is returning to Georgia Tech. Bohannon was hired Friday to serve as a senior offensive assistant for Yellow Jackets coach Brent Key. The move was announced Friday as one of four staff additions for the program. “Excited to be back on the Flats!” Bohannon said on X. “Special place with special leadership! #StingEm” Bohannon will be returning to the sideline after being fired on Nov. 10, following a double-overtime loss at UTEP that dropped Kennesaw State to 1-8 in its first season in Conference USA and the Football Bowl Subdivision. It will be the second stint for Bohannon at Georgia Tech. Before being hired in 2013 to launch the Kennesaw State football program, Bohannon spent 16 years as an assistant under College Football Hall of Famer Paul Johnson, including five years coaching quarterbacks and B-backs at Georgia Tech from 2008-12. The 54-year-old Bohannon also coached wide receivers and defensive backs under Johnson at Navy and Georgia Southern. In his 10 years at Kennesaw State, Bohannon went 72-38 overall, leading the Owls to three Big South Conference championships and four Football Championship Subdivision playoff appearances. Twice, he led the Owls to the FCS quarterfinals.
Bohannon was named the Big South Coach of the Year three times, the American Football Coaches FCS Coach of the Year in 2017, and the AFCA District Coach of the Year in 2018. Before being fired, Bohannon oversaw the beginning of Kennesaw State’s transition to the FBS. The Owls started the season 0-6 before beating previously unbeaten Liberty 27-24 in front of a national TV audience for the program’s first Division I victory. Georgia Tech also announced the addition of Kobie Jones as cornerbacks coach, Mike Polly as assistant offensive line coach, and Emil Ekiyor Jr. as a quality control assistant on the offensive line. The Yellow Jackets will be looking to build off a 7-6 season that saw the program twice beat top-10 opponents and take archrival Georgia to a historic eight-overtime game.
