Callihan has an opportunity to provide Reds value in the outfield
Following a solid performance and a rebounding season, Tyler Callahan was added to the Cincinnati Reds’ 40-man roster. He joins a motley crew of outfielders who are by far the organization’s poorest position group. Callahan had the second-most hits and at-bats on his squad at the end of the Arizona Fall League. Between Chattanooga and Louisville, he slashed.276/.359/.429—the finest year of his minor league career since 2021. Callahan is presently one of the Reds’ 40-man roster’s many active outfielders. He is joined on the 40-man roster by Spencer Steer, Will Benson, Jake Fraley, TJ Friedl, Stuart Fairchild, Rice Hinds, Blake Dunn, and Jacob Hurtubise.
The person you trust the most out of the whole list is Steer. Steer is still expected to play a significant role and be a contender to return to Cincinnati in 2025, despite having a somewhat subpar 2024. Despite being the greatest outfield player, Friedl is also the most prone to injury. Last year, Friedl was put on the injured list several times. In 2024, Benson made far too many mistakes. Enough that his meager contribution to the production was insignificant. Fraley’s slugging % was lower than anticipated, despite his strong hitting average. Although he is a strong contender to recover, he is a platoon player who is nearly useless against left-handed pitchers.
Although Fairchild filled in excellently, he was unplayable against right-handed pitchers and displayed a lack of attention to detail in crucial situations. Hurtubise, Dunn, and Hinds all have a lot to prove. For a brief minute, Hinds was impressive, but for an equally lengthy stretch, he was unplayable.
